Audience, Purpose, and Genre

Audience, purpose, and genre are all very important in writing. If you don't understand these principles your writing will not be effective.

Audience:
So what is your audience? Your audience is the group of people that your writing is intended for. We communicate with different people in different ways. For example, you wouldn't talk to your mom the same way that you'd talk to your best friend. When we know how to effectively communicate with our audience, we will be able to reach them and be effective in our communication. This is especially important in writing.

Purpose:
Your purpose is also very important. As a writer, you need to know what you are trying to accomplish through your work. You need to know what your purpose for writing is, and what you want to share with your audience. In order to effectively reach your audience, you need to know what your purpose is.

Genre:
Genre is important for a similar reason that knowing your audience is important. Once you know your audience, you need to know what method of writing will be most effective for them. Just as you know how to approach your mom when asking for a favor, you should know what genre will best reach your audience.
